AI in Assessment

UniSQ uses two assessment categories to communicate expectations about assessment conditions and the use of AI: Verified and Open.

This approach is designed to provide clearer expectations for students, support the appropriate and authentic use of AI, and strengthen academic integrity.

Verified and Open Assessments

Verified assessments take place in monitored environments where student identity and performance can be verified. These assessments use authentication processes and controlled access to resources. 

Examples may include: 

  • Invigilated examinations
  • Viva voces (live oral exams) 
  • Practical or clinical skills assessments such as Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) 

Depending on the assessment requirements, AI use may be restricted or not permitted.  

Open assessments are completed in unsupervised environments where students have access to external resources. 
 
Examples may include: 
  • Take-home assignments
  • Projects
  • Open-book examinations 
  • Online quizzes 

AI use may be permitted in Open assessments; however, expectations for AI use will vary. Your course coordinator will provide guidance on how AI can be used authentically and appropriately within the specific assessment context.

Each assessment includes guidance in the Assessment Task Sheet. The Assessment Task Sheet outlines: 

  • Whether the assessment is Verified or Open
  • Whether AI can be used
  • How AI can be used (where permitted)
  • Any requirements for documenting or acknowledging AI use 

Before starting an assessment, make sure you read the Assessment Task Sheet carefully and understand the expectations that apply to your task.  

Where AI use is permitted, you are responsible for:

  • Following the assessment instructions (always check the specific AI guidance provided for each assessment, as it may vary depending on the task)
  • Using AI authentically and appropriately
  • Being transparent about how AI was used
  • Providing any required acknowledgements or evidence of AI use
  • Demonstrating your own learning and understanding

Following the AI guidance for each assessment helps ensure your work demonstrates your own learning and meets UniSQ's academic integrity requirements.
