Research institutes and centres

Research with real-world impact – for individuals, communities and industries - drives the way we think, innovate and act at the University of Southern Queensland.

Institute for Resilient Regions

The Institute for Resilient Regions conducts research that enables rural, remote and regional communities to be resilient and adaptive, liveable and prosperous, healthy and active, and connected and collaborative. We work with government, non-government and business organisations to understand and help communities to innovate, successfully navigate change, develop and deploy new skills, technology and infrastructure, strengthen community health and well-being and appreciate and develop cultural capital and experiences.

Executive Director: Professor Hon. John McVeigh

Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences

The Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences provides a dedicated facility for space and defence research, specialising in hypersonic propulsion systems, rocket fuel development, astrophysics, machine vision, and advanced materials. With world-class infrastructure and equipment, the Institute is home to a long duration hypersonic wind tunnel and rocket lab, as well as one of Australia’s largest dedicated composite materials, manufacturing, and testing facilities. Our Mount Kent Observatory provides the only dedicated ground-based support in the southern hemisphere for NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission.

Prof. Joanne Aitken

Cancer Council Queensland

'In a very special research partnership with UniSQ, our team of researchers are looking into social and behavioural factors that might contribute to the poorer outcomes that people in regional parts of Queensland suffer for major diseases such as cancer. We are committed to working together to address the disparity between country and city health so that we can ensure a greater quality of life for all Queenslanders, no matter where they live.'

Mario Pannucio
Neilsens Concrete (CEO)

'We are working with UniSQ research to develop a more sustainable product to change the way the world makes concrete and deliver millions of tonnes less of CO2.'
