Overview

  • Immerse yourself in a scientific field your passionate about and build the foundation to become a skilled research scientist. This degree empowers you to play a pivotal role in research on topics or issues that matter to you most, fostering critical thinking and problem solving and opening doors to a career that makes a difference.  
  • You will be guided by renowned academics and professionals in three core courses where you will carry out original scientific research, evaluate real-world practical problems and the limitations they place on progress in science, and you will learn to critically evaluate scientific literature.   
  • You will also participate in research teams, be introduced to advanced experimental and literature research methods, and have opportunities to make contact with the wider scientific community in the local region, elsewhere in Australia and overseas. 
  • Flexibility within the Bachelor of Science (Honours) allows you to start studying full-time or part-time in Trimester 1, 2 or 3, which particularly allows season-dependent research to be undertaken whenever that is most appropriate.

Professional accreditation

If you choose to conduct your research in Psychology, this specialisation is fully accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a fourth-year degree in psychology. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Science (Honours), you will be eligible to apply for provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. However, there is a requirement to complete a further two years of supervised practice or an approved masters program after initial registration. You would also eligible to apply to the Australian Psychological Society for Associate Membership.  

If you achieve a high level of honours (either First Class or Second Class, Division A), you would be eligible to apply for a Masters program or PhD at UniSQ and other universities.

What you'll study

To graduate from the Bachelor of Science (Honours), you must successfully complete 8 units of study.

Degree structure

A one-year Honours degree builds your independent research, critical thinking and academic writing skills, and is ideal if you want to specialise, conduct research or pursue postgraduate study (like a masters or PhD).

Students in the BSCH must complete three (3) mandatory core courses (6 units), followed by EITHER SCI4421 (2 units), OR SCI4403 and one other course approved by the Honours supervisor, OR two other courses approved by the Honours supervisor.

Students may enrol in SCI4403 and one other course approved by the Honours supervisor.
OR

Students may enrol in two courses approved by the Honours supervisor.

Entry requirements

You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this honours degree.

  • Completion of an Australian university bachelor degree, or equivalent, in the area of Honours study (normally with a substantial amount of undergraduate study in the major area of the discipline in which the Honours study is to be undertaken), with a minimum GPA of 5.0 (credit).
  • Candidates must have both supervisory and honours committee approval prior to enrolment.
  • Applicants for the Psychology specialisation must have completed an undergraduate degree or qualification approved by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as constituting the first three years (or equivalent) of study in psychology within the last three years. Places within the Bachelor of Science (Honours) specialising in Psychology are limited by quota. Satisfaction of admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

All applicants

You'll need to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires:

  • IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 6.0 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Alternative English language proficiency tests may also be accepted.

The Federal Government contributes to the cost of your degree, and you need to pay a student contribution.

Payment options

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.
