Which Psychology degree is for me?

While not everyone who studies psychology will go on to be a psychologist, the coursework and training is highly relevant and useful to a range of career paths.

In every UniSQ Psychology degree you will study the same foundational psychology courses (12 units), so which degree is right for you will depend on your interests and career goals.

  • If you study the Psychology major in Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts, you’ll have the opportunity to complement your psychology knowledge with another major or two minors. Perhaps Anthropology, Human Resource Management, Emergent Leadership, or Criminology and Criminal Justice?
  • Within the Bachelor of Science (Psychology Extended), you will delve deeper into advanced theory and practice in psychological sciences, ending your degree with a two-unit capstone course, which will be research-focused or practitioner-focused (undertaking a work placement).
  • Studying the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) has a greater focus on developing your professional portfolio through psychological-skills based courses. This degree is particularly beneficial if your primary focus is working with clients.

For full registration as a psychologist requires an Honours-year plus two years of supervised practice, or an Honours-year plus a Masters or Doctorate degree.

Career outcomes

As a graduate, you can find work as a:

  • welfare officer
  • youth worker
  • child safety officer counsellor
  • case worker
  • mental health support worker
  • marker research analyst.

A psychology degree can also open a raft of job opportunities in a multitude of industries including jobs in the public and private sector, marketing, human resource management, counselling and sport.

Professional accreditation

The Psychology major is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as providing the first three years of the necessary requirements for full membership as a psychologist.

Full registration as a psychologist requires an Honours-year plus two years of supervised practice or an Honours-year plus a Masters or Doctorate degree.
