As a graduate, you are prepared to work as a qualified teacher in Prep to Year 6 in primary schools in Queensland, throughout Australia and overseas (subject to local requirements).
Teaching skills are also in demand in other areas, including roles with human services, community-based government organisations and recreation and tourism industries.
Professional accreditation
This degree is approved with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).
As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher through the Queensland College of Teachers. For registration in Queensland, both domestic and international students are required to attend the majority of placements in settings within Australia.

To graduate from the Bachelor of Education (Primary), you must successfully complete 32 units of study.

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previous studies or relevant work experience. This could reduce the number of courses you need to study to complete your degree.
Degree requirements
All students must provide evidence of an attempt at the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) by the end of their first year, which is measured by 8 courses/units of study. For First Nations language speakers, recognition of First Nations language proficiency by a relevant cultural authority is an acceptable alternative standard. Additionally, students are made aware of this requirement through block announcements on designated first year StudyDesks, Orientation programs and student notifications when Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) test windows become available.
You will also need to complete 80 days of professional experience to gain valuable skills in primary classrooms. These experiences provide you with opportunities to put theory into practice.

Entry requirements
There are many ways to be considered for entry into a UniSQ degree based on your education, work experience and relevant personal attributes.

You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.
Subject pre-requisites:
- English (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent.
This information applies if you’ve previously completed or started higher education study at university.
If you’ve done any study at UniSQ or another university, you may be eligible to apply based on your previous studies. We’ll use the best selection rank from your previous studies when assessing your application.
If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you can use your Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) awards of:
- certificate III
- certificate IV
- diploma or
- advanced diploma
to apply to study with UniSQ.
We will review your academic history to determine if you’re eligible for admission. We’ll convert your TAFE or VET qualification, past school results and any relevant work experience into a selection rank. This selection rank will determine which degrees you meet the entry requirements for.
If it’s been over two years since you completed secondary education and you haven’t pursued any vocational education training (VET) or higher education since, you’re still eligible to study at UniSQ.
You don't need to have an ATAR or come straight from high school to study at uni. Your work experience and other adjustment factors may help you meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

- IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 7.5, with a minimum 7.0 in writing and reading, and a mimimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening.

Additional costs

Placement courses may incur some additional costs, including uniform and equipment, transport to and from venues and, in some instances, living expenses, particularly for placements in rural and remote settings.
You may be eligible to receive the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) designed to help cover some of the costs associated with mandatory placements.
Payment options

Graduates from a Bachelor of Teaching Primary or Bachelor of Education Primary in Queensland are trained to teach students from Prep to Year 6.
The requirement to get into a Bachelor of Education Primary is a minimum ATAR and subject pre-requisites in English, maths and a Year 12 science subject. You’ll also need to submit written statements addressing your suitability and motivation to becoming a teacher.

Most Bachelor of Primary Education degrees take four years to finish if you study full-time, with four subjects per semester. If you study part-time with two courses per semester, it will take longer than four years to finish.
