As a graduate, you are prepared to work as a qualified teacher in Years 7 to 12 in Queensland, throughout Australia and overseas (subject to local requirements).
Teaching skills are also in demand in other areas, including roles with human services, community-based government organisations and recreation and tourism industries.
Professional accreditation
This degree is approved with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).
As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher through the Queensland College of Teachers. For registration in Queensland, both domestic and international students are required to attend the majority of placements in settings within Australia.
What you'll study
To graduate from the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), you must successfully complete 32 units of study.
Degree structure

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previous studies or relevant work experience. This could reduce the number of courses you need to study to complete your degree.
Degree requirements
You will also need to complete 80 days of professional experience to gain valuable skills in primary classrooms. These experiences provide you with opportunities to put theory into practice.

All students must be able to meet professional requirements expected of teachers within this degree.
All students must provide evidence of an attempt at the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) by the end of their first year, which is measured by 8 courses/units of study. For First Nations language speakers, recognition of First Nations language proficiency by a relevant cultural authority is an acceptable alternative standard. Additionally, students are made aware of this requirement through block announcements on designated first year StudyDesks, Orientation programs and student notifications when Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) test windows become available.

Entry requirements
There are many ways to be considered for entry into a UniSQ degree based on your education, work experience and relevant personal attributes.
Select the highest level of education you have or will be completing to find the entry requirements that applies to you.
You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.
Subject pre-requisites:
- English (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent
- Design or Engineering in Years 11 and 12 - only required for applicants wanting to apply for the Trade to Teach Internship Program specialising in Design and Technology.
This information applies if you’ve previously completed or started higher education study at university.
If you’ve done any study at UniSQ or another university, you may be eligible to apply based on your previous studies. We’ll use the best selection rank from your previous studies when assessing your application.
If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you can use your Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) awards of:
- certificate III
- certificate IV
- diploma or
- advanced diploma
to apply to study with UniSQ.
We will review your academic history to determine if you’re eligible for admission. We’ll convert your TAFE or VET qualification, past school results and any relevant work experience into a selection rank. This selection rank will determine which degrees you meet the entry requirements for.
If it’s been over two years since you completed secondary education and you haven’t pursued any vocational education training (VET) or higher education since, you’re still eligible to study at UniSQ.
You don't need to have an ATAR or come straight from high school to study at uni. Your work experience and other adjustment factors may help you meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

- IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 7.5, with a minimum 7.0 in writing and reading, and a mimimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening.

Additional costs
You may be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as part of your degree cost.
Placement courses may incur some additional costs, including uniform and equipment, transport to and from venues and, in some instances, living expenses, particularly for placements in rural and remote settings.
You may be eligible to receive the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) designed to help cover some of the costs associated with mandatory placements.
Payment options
You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.

Do you want to help shape the lives of the next generation? A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree makes you eligible for teacher registration and allows you to teach two subject areas in the school curriculum.
With the ability to specialise in two of your interest areas of choice i.e. History and English, you’ll be prepared to embark on a rewarding career in education and teaching, working in private or government schools.
Through professional experience placements, you’ll gain experience in classroom teaching, lesson preparation, and have the opportunity to interact with students in different schools and classroom settings.
To gain entry into a Bachelor of Education Secondary degree, you will need to:
- meet a minimum ATAR, pre-requisites and inherent requirements
- submit a written statement addressing your motivation and suitability to become a teacher
- meet the physical and professional requirements before starting your prac placements, such as obtain a Working with Children Check (valid Blue Card).

A Bachelor of Secondary Education (or equivalent) generally takes four years of full-time study to complete. If you already have an education qualification from TAFE or relevant work experience, you may be eligible to receive credit to help you finish your degree faster.
Make the right decision for your lifestyle and choose to study the Bachelor of Education full-time or part-time. A part-time study load is undertaking less than 6 courses during one academic year, which could be an option if you have other commitments while completing your degree.
You can choose to study our Bachelor of Education Secondary online, with exception to your practical placement courses, which will require you to attend a range of school settings.
