Management of data and information in research

Responsible data management is an essential element of research integrity. At UniSQ, researchers are expected to manage research data and primary materials in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) and UniSQ’s Research Data and Primary Materials Procedure. Researchers also need to be aware of relevant legal, statutory, ethics and funding body requirements.

Researchers have an obligation under the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research to:

  • Retain clear, accurate, secure and complete records of all research including research data and primary materials. Where possible and appropriate, allow access and reference to these by interested parties

The University works in partnership with Researchers, institutes, centres, schools and relevant Research support providers to implement best practice. The University has a responsibility to provide a framework that:

  • supports Researchers through the provision of appropriate information, resources and training; and
  • ensures Researchers can meet their responsibilities in relation to safe and secure storage (e.g., storage facilities are supported and available to access).

The University offers a dedicated Research information management system to support the appropriate storage and management of Research Data and digitised Primary Materials. It is recommended that a Research Data Management Plan (RDMP) be completed for each research project. To access the Research Data Management Plan, log in to the UniSQ RISE Research Repository. If you have any questions relating to research data management planning, refer to the Research Data Management Plan Guide and the Library Research Support page.

Why Data Management Matters

Effective data management:

  • Ensures transparency, reproducibility, and accountability in research.
  • Protects the rights and privacy of research participants.
  • Supports long-term preservation and accessibility of research outputs.
  • Enables compliance with legal, ethical, and funding requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Researchers must:

  • Plan for data management early in the research lifecycle, including storage, access, retention, and disposal. Management plans should be developed for all Research projects and activities.
  • Document data collection methods, formats, and metadata clearly and consistently.
  • Store data securely using approved UniSQ systems and infrastructure.
  • Retain data for the minimum periods specified in UniSQ’s procedures, or longer if required by funding or legal obligations.
  • Share data ethically and responsibly, respecting confidentiality, intellectual property, and cultural sensitivities.
