Publication and dissemination of research

Publication and dissemination of research is an important part of the research process, passing on the benefits to a diverse range of potential beneficiaries of research, including other researchers, research sponsors, consumers and industry, policy-makers, and the public. Methods of dissemination continue to evolve and expand, which can assist in more effectively reaching diverse audiences.

Under the Code, a principle of responsible research conduct is ‘Transparency’ which requires researchers and institutions to share and communicate research methodology, data and findings openly, responsibly and accurately. Another principle directly applicable to the publication and dissemination of research is ‘Accountability’ which requires researchers and institutions to consider the consequences and outcomes of research prior to its communication.

Under the Code, researchers have the responsibility to:

  • Adopt methods appropriate to the aims of the research and ensure that conclusions are justified by the results.
  • Disseminate research findings responsibly, accurately and broadly. Where necessary, take action to correct the record in a timely manner.
  • Disclose and manage actual, potential and perceived conflicts of interest.
  • Cite and acknowledge other relevant work appropriately and accurately.
  • Retain clear, accurate, secure and complete records of all research including research data and primary materials. Where possible and appropriate, allow access and reference to these by interested parties.
  • Engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and respect their legal rights and local laws, customs and protocols.

The responsible publication and dissemination of research also involves:

  • Adherence to criteria for authorship, acknowledgement and affiliation
  • Appropriate protection of confidential and sensitive information
  • Careful evaluation of the credibility of the publisher

It is important to begin publication planning early in the research lifecycle. Researchers should consider the UniSQ Library’s Publication planning advice for information on Open Access publishing, tips on identifying a suitable journals, open access options, and information on copyright and licences. It’s also important to be familiar with UniSQ's data management and storage requirements and have a data management plan in place and, if needed, one or more Authorship Agreements.

In choosing an outlet for your work, ensure to consider funding requirements related to Open Access and the University’s information regarding Open Access Publishing. Ensure to also be mindful of any restrictions or embargos imposed by various parties when communicating research to the public. Also consider how to report on research if it has not yet been peer reviewed. Information shared must also be in accordance with any related human research ethics approval.

The Media Engagement Procedure provides advice on the requirements in dealing with interactions with the Media as provided in the Media Engagement Policy. UniSQ researchers wishing to communicate their findings to the public and in the media should refer to the Media Engagement Procedure and consult with Media and Strategic Communications staff.
