Overview

  • Extend your skills in mining engineering and be ready to support the design, implementation, and operation of efficient and safe mining systems.
  • Study an industry-aligned major that has been developed as part of the Minerals Industry National Associate Degree (MINAD) project established by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA).   
  • Explore how open-cut and underground mines are planned, designed, tested, and operated, while gaining hands-on experience both in class and on-site.
  • Build on your existing knowledge—or start fresh—as you develop the skills and capabilities of a mining engineering technologist.
     

Further study

When you have completed the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, you have the option to undertake the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and receive the appropriate credit.

Professional accreditation

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, you will eligible to apply for membership with Engineers Australia as an Engineering Technologist. After gaining experience from working in the field, you can apply for chartered status as an Engineering Technologist.

As a graduate, you’ll be qualified to pursue a range of positions within Australia and overseas. Potential career paths include:

  • mining technician
  • drill and blast technician
  • mine production supervisor
  • mine planning assistant
  • maintenance planner
  • support roles assisting with mine development planning, designing pit and waste areas, scheduling mining excavation and haulage processes, instrumentation and geotechnical monitoring, controlling and monitoring mining operations, and production.

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C), and
  • Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C)

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you may be able to use these qualifications to meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study with our English language partner, the Union Institute of Language (UIL), or if you're a domestic student you can apply to study UniSQ Ready courses TPP0122 and TPP0123.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

Practical experience

As part of this degree, you will need to complete practical experience, where interactive hands-on activities, such as experiments and use of specialist equipment, are undertaken.

All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical experience within this degree.

Residential schools

All students will have the opportunity to come on-campus for residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials to gain practical experience, use facilities and specialist equipment, and meet staff and other students.
