  • Become a registered primary school teacher in as little as 18 months and be ready to inspire the next generation. The Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) is designed for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education.  
  • Gain the skills and confidence to teach children aged five to 12 across all learning areas of the school curriculum with a specialised focus on English Literacy. 
  • Put your learning into practice with 60 days of placements in state, Catholic or independent school settings. 
  • Have the opportunity to apply for the government’s Turn to Teaching Internship Program which offers $20,000 to cover study expenses, a second-year paid internship on fulltime salary, and an offer of permanent employment upon graduation.

As a graduate, you are eligible for teacher registration. This presents many exciting opportunities for finding employment as a teacher for a wide variety of diverse contexts including metropolitan, rural and remote and international schools. 

Want the skills you acquire training to be a teacher but not necessarily keen to be in the classroom? Teaching-related skills of communication and educational management are also in demand in careers such as sport and leisure centre management, personal training, life coaching and other professions in the human services. 

Professional accreditation

As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration through the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). This degree also meets the expectations and requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

What you'll study

To graduate from the Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary), you must successfully complete 16 units of study.

Degree structure

A postgraduate university degree typically comprises of advanced coursework and research opportunities, allowing you to deepen your expertise in a specific field while building upon foundational knowledge.

Degree requirements

You will also need to complete 60 days of supervised professional experience. This experience provides you with the opportunity to put theory into practice and to build significant industry connections. You are required to attend the majority of placements in settings within Australia. 

You need to be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of professional experience placements within this degree.

All students must provide evidence of an attempt at the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) by the end of their first year, which is measured by 8 courses/units of study. For First Nations language speakers, recognition of First Nations language proficiency by a relevant cultural authority is an acceptable alternative standard.

Students are made aware of this requirement through block announcements on designated first year StudyDesks, Orientation programs and student notifications when Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) test windows become available.

Entry requirements

There are many ways to be considered for entry into a UniSQ degree based on your education, work experience and relevant personal attributes. You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this postgraduate degree.

  • Completed a 3-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, in a discipline other than education with a minimum GPA of 4.0 out of 7.0.
  • Applicants must demonstrate through eight units of their undergraduate degree, or other equivalent studies, adequate knowledge of one or more learning areas related to the Australian primary school curriculum. These areas are English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Arts, Health and Physical Education, Languages, and Technology. This requirement for discipline studies can be met through further study that is completed from different courses at bachelor degree level or higher.

While not an entry requirement, if an applicant has achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with this admission application.

While not needed to apply, you'll need to meet these requirements throughout your studies.

In order to attend a professional experience placement in Queensland, you must hold a valid Blue Card or Exemption Card

The Federal Government contributes to the cost of your degree, and you need to pay a student contribution.
  • This estimated 2025 annual fee is based on the current average rate for your first year of study (8 units per year) and does not include cost of materials such as textbooks, additional costs or the Student Services and Amenities fee
  • This is an indicative guide only and your fees will vary depending on the courses you select, with the actual rates calculated at enrolment.
  • We review our fees annually and they may increase each year.

Additional costs

You may be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as part of your degree cost.

Placement courses may incur some additional costs, including uniform and equipment, transport to and from venues and, in some instances, living expenses, particularly for placements in rural and remote settings.

You may be eligible to receive the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) designed to help cover some of the costs associated with mandatory placements.

Payment options

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.

You may also be eligible to receive financial support from Services Australia.

After completing a Master of Primary Teaching you will be qualified to teach children in Prep (4-5 years old) to Year 6 (aged 11-12 years old) in private or public schools.

The requirements to get into a Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) at UniSQ are:

  • Completion of a 3-year bachelor degree, or equivalent in a discipline other than education.
  • Demonstration through eight units of your undergraduate degree adequate knowledge of one or more learning areas related to the Australian primary school curriculum.

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied. This will help reduce the number of courses that you need to complete.

UniSQ’s Masters of Learning and Teaching (Primary) takes 18 months to complete in an accelerated program taught in four semesters, which is equivalent to 2 years full-time study.

Some students choose to study a standard semester structure which takes 2 years to complete if you study full-time. You can also study part-time, however, this will increase the time it takes to finish the required courses.

Yes! The Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) is available to study online except for your professional experience/education placements which you’ll undertake in a school setting.

The cost of a Master of Teaching Primary in Australia will vary depending on your choice of education provider.

When you study a Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) at UniSQ, the first year of your studies will cost approximately AUD 3985 (Commonwealth supported place) not including:

  • Student services and amenities fees
  • Professional experience costs.
