  • Are you a registered nurse looking to become a midwife? Our hands-on Graduate Diploma of Midwifery just might be the answer. By studying a postgraduate midwifery degree with UniSQ, you will receive broad experience in all care contexts, including First Nations health and human rights.
  • Gain over 1000 hours of professional midwifery practice experience within a range of settings such as hospitals, family planning clinics, community health, and home visiting. You will experience professional midwifery practice in birth suites, antenatal clinics, postnatal and neonatal units.
  • Under the supervision of a registered midwife, you will experience the continuity of care of a minimum of 10 women throughout their pregnancy.
  • Develop the skills needed to make high-level, autonomous decisions in providing advanced midwifery care. Learn to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate the management of a range of situations throughout a woman’s pregnancy, birth and early weeks of parenthood. Use evidence-based theory to transform care in the real world of practice.

This degree is currently undergoing an accreditation assessment by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) which will enable delivery of the Graduate Diploma in 2026.

What you'll study

To graduate from the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery, you must successfully complete 8 units of study.

Degree structure

A postgraduate university degree typically comprises of advanced coursework and research opportunities, allowing you to deepen your expertise in a specific field while building upon foundational knowledge.

Degree requirements

You will be required to attend two (2) residential schools at UniSQ Ipswich campus as part of this degree. Each residential school goes for four (4) days. During these sessions, you will undertake simulated learning in our high-tech laboratories and woman-centred birth suite, as well as engage with staff and fellow students.

You'll need to attend all mandatory residential school course requirements before you can commence your clinical placements in the community.

As part of the degree, you will need to complete 1100 hours of clinical placement experience where you'll practice the provision of maternity services to women and their families under supervision of a registered midwife or other appropriate health care professionals.

All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical placements within this degree.

You'll be expected to purchase and wear a UniSQ midwifery uniform while studying on-campus and during off-campus clinical placements.

Entry requirements

There are many ways to be considered for entry into a UniSQ degree based on your education, work experience and relevant personal attributes. You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this postgraduate degree.

  • Be a registered nurse (Division 1) with a bachelor degree in nursing, or equivalent qualification*, with current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) registration. Applicants will need to provide evidence of current registration as a nurse with an Ahpra certificate.
  • Attend an interview with a midwifery program representative and/or a service provider representative to demonstrate your ability to commit to the requirements of this degree.

* ‎An equivalent qualification is considered where an applicant has studied overseas or has completed a Master of Nursing pre-registration program, and the qualification has been deemed suitable by the NMBA to be credentialled as a Registered Nurse.

Please note: Meeting entry requirements does not guarantee admission. Places within this degree are limited by quota. Quota size is determined by the availability of hospital placements. Where the quota is filled, no further places will be offered.

You'll need to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires:

  • IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Alternative English language proficiency tests may also be accepted.

During your study

While not needed to apply, you'll need to meet these requirements throughout your studies.

Inherent requirements are fundamental skills, capabilities, and knowledge that you must be able to demonstrate to achieve the essential learning outcomes of the degree, while maintaining the academic integrity of the degree.

All students will need to provide the following documents prior to commencing residential schools and clinical placements:

  • Blue Card or Working with Children Check 
  • Australian Police Certificate.

Plus evidence of the following immunisations:

  • Hepatitis B immunisation
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, and Varicella immunisation
  • Tuberculosis risk assessment
  • Influenza immunisation
  • COVID-19 vaccinations (as directed by health services).

The Federal Government contributes to the cost of your degree, and you need to pay a student contribution.
  • This estimated 2025 annual fee is based on the current average rate for your first year of study (8 units per year) and does not include cost of materials such as textbooks, additional costs or the Student Services and Amenities fee
  • This is an indicative guide only and your fees will vary depending on the courses you select, with the actual rates calculated at enrolment.

Additional costs

You may be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as part of your degree cost.

This degree includes an on-campus residential school component that involves travel, accommodation, and meal expenses.

Placement courses may incur some additional costs, including uniform and equipment, transport to and from venues and, in some instances, living expenses, particularly for placements in rural and remote settings.

Payment options

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.
