What you'll study
To graduate from the Bachelor of Visual Art, you must successfully complete 24 units of study.
Degree structure
An undergraduate university degree typically consists of a combination of core, major and elective courses designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and opportunities for an in-depth deeper dive into your chosen field.

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previous studies or relevant work experience. This could reduce the number of courses you need to study to complete your degree.
Degree requirements
As part of the degree, you will need to complete practical placements. Placements in industry provide professional experience, putting the theory into practice, and opportunities to start networking with potential employers.
All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical placements within this degree.
While studying this degree, you will need to provide some of your own art materials. Materials lists will vary depending on the studio area(s) you will undertake. Further details will be provided during Orientation Week and at the commencement of individual courses.

Entry requirements
You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.

- Attend an interview with portfolio.
- To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in English (Units 3 & 4, C) and Visual Arts (Units 3 & 4, C). We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.
- If no ATAR, applicants can successfully undertake an interview and supply a written statement.
Interview information
Applicants will need to bring:
- a head shot-style photo of yourself
- a school exit statement, or evidence of previous education standard achieved
- a portfolio of work to the interview. This should contain at least 8-10 high quality images of past artwork. Please note: it is not necessary to bring the physical work.
- If you don't have an ATAR, please bring a written statement (500 words) addressing your interest, goals, and aspirations in studying visual arts, with some reflection on your visual art experiences and training.

- Please register for an interview. Once registered, we will review your submission and invite you to be interviewed.
You'll need to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires:
- IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 6.0 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Alternative English language proficiency tests may also be accepted.
During your study
While not needed to apply, you'll need to meet these requirements throughout your studies.
It is a requirement that Queensland-based students hold a current positive notice indicating that they are deemed suitable for working with children and young people whilst studying the Bachelor of Visual Art. It is important to apply early to allow enough time for your application to be assessed and processed to meet study commencement dates and participation in Orientation activities. You should also factor in visa processing requirements and timeframes, where applicable.
After you’ve submitted your application, you will be emailed a reference number. Please allow up to 14 days for assessment. If further assessment is required for course credits or exemptions, this process may take longer.

At UniSQ, an undergraduate Arts and Communication degree, such as the Bachelor of Visual Arts usually takes 3 years of full-time study. Some students choose to study part-time which increases the time it takes to complete the required courses.
