What you'll study

To graduate from the Bachelor of Cyber Security, you must successfully complete 24 units of study.

Your eligibility for recognition of prior learning, based on 5 years' work experience from a defence, health, sciences, social sciences, or creative arts background, provides up to 8 units of credit in the Professional Practice major. If you have 5 years of work experience from any discipline background but are unable to satisfy 8 units of credit for the Professional Practice major, there are a range of elective courses available to assist in the completion of this element of the degree.

Degree structure

Students will be required to secure a 12-month paid Cyber Security Professional Placement.

Students will be considered for up to 8 units of Professional Practice credit and the outcome will determine how many electives are required to complete the program.

Candidates for admission to the Bachelor of Cyber Security may be eligible for up to 8 units of credit on the basis of previous experience. Credit approved in this program will not automatically apply to other programs offered by UniSQ. Claims for credit for previous study should be submitted prior to or at the time of enrolment. Each claim will be assessed on individual merit in line with UniSQ policy. Where applicants with 5 years of work experience from any discipline background are unable to satisfy 8 units of credit for the Professional Practice Major, there are a range of elective courses available to assist in the completion of this element of the program.
Professional Practice

Students may undertake between 1 and 8 units of study to complete the Professional Practice Major.

Applicants may be eligible for recognition of prior learning for their work experience which may count towards the Professional Practice major element of the degree. Claims for recognition of prior learning should be submitted before or at the time of application.  

Degree requirements

As part of this degree, you'll have the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience through a 12-month paid professional placement. While you'll be responsible for arranging the placement yourself, this experience will be an excellent addition to your professional journey. 

Other study options

If you’re interested in further study, after completion of this degree you can go on to study the Master of Cyber Security, Master of Information Systems, Master of Information Technology or the Master of Research (if you meet all the entry requirements).

  • Applicants are required to have a minimum of 5 years' work experience, or part-time equivalent, from a defence, health, sciences, social sciences or creative arts background, through submission of a resume. 
  • Applicants will need to:
    • attend an interview with staff from the School of Mathematics, Physics and Computing to determine suitability for entry,
    • supply a letter of support of a paid professional placement from an employer to be eligible for admission to this degree (locating a paid professional placement in cyber security is the responsibility of the applicant).

Notes

This degree requires students to be eligible for a baseline security clearance. We recommend checking the eligibility criteria to ensure you qualify to apply for the security clearance, in case your current or future employers require it. 

Applicants may be eligible for recognition of prior learning for their work experience which may count towards the Professional Practice major element of the degree. Claims for recognition of prior learning should be submitted before or at the time of application.

You'll need to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires:

  • IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 6.0 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Alternative English language proficiency tests may also be accepted.

The Federal Government contributes to the cost of your degree, and you need to pay a student contribution.
  • This estimated 2025 annual fee is based on the current average rate for your first year of study (8 units per year) and does not include cost of materials such as textbooks, additional costs or the Student Services and Amenities fee

Additional costs

You may be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as part of your degree cost.

Placement courses may incur some additional costs, including uniform and equipment, transport to and from venues and, in some instances, living expenses, particularly for placements in rural and remote settings

Payment options

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.
