How to apply
Once you know where you want to study, make sure you check the relevant application due dates:
- Trimester 1 (on exchange): complete applications are to be received by 31 August the previous year (e.g. T1 2026 application deadline is 31 August 2025).
- Trimester 2 or 3 (on exchange): complete applications are to be received by 28 February of the same year.
Note: some institutions have earlier deadlines or require longer visa application timeframes.
Go to topConsult your UniSQ degree enrolment plan and locate the course catalogue for your chosen host university. Please direct enquiries about your enrolment plan to your faculty by emailing support@unisq.edu.au.
Complete the following:
- Make a list of possible courses - choose about six to eight courses per semester to get them assessed by their program coordinator
- courses starting with 1000 are usually first year courses
- courses starting with 2000 are usually second year courses
- courses starting with 3000 are usually third year courses
- some courses will have pre-requisites.
- It is recommended you select elective courses for your study - If this is not possible, please match courses that will align to the course requirements of your UniSQ degree.
Note: if you are applying for the Semester Exchange Program you will need to choose courses from more than one university as you may not be placed at your first choice.

- Submit the course outlines to your UniSQ program coordinator for approval.
Note: if one (or more) the full course syllabus is unavailable from your chosen host university’s website, please provide the Mobility Team via email studyabroad@unisq.edu.au a list of the courses you wish to take.
Go to topConsider the required documentation that you will need to support your application, you should:
- Acquire a reference letter from your lecturer or tutor.
- Complete a Statement of Purpose outlining the reasons why you wish to study abroad, objectives for the experience, and how these will influence your future personal and professional goals.
- Obtain and provide an up-to-date official academic transcript.
Your application will be assessed and an outcome sent to you, if successful:
- Your exchange nomination will be forwarded to the host university.
- The host university will contact you for further information and application steps.
- Once approved, you will receive a Letter of Offer.
- When you receive a Letter of Offer, it is your responsibility to complete all the necessary forms, organise your accommodation and apply for your visa.
Enrolment
Exchange programs:
You must remain enrolled at UniSQ during your time overseas. The Mobility Team will enrol you into courses at UniSQ so that your tuition fees are charged and deferred to your HELP loan (if applicable).
Study Abroad programs:
You must take a leave of absence from your UniSQ studies while overseas and pay tuition fees directly to your host university.
Visa requirements
To study overseas, most countries require students to have a student visa. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides links to all foreign embassies and consulates in Australia. You should contact the relevant embassy or consulate for details.

As a UniSQ student participating in Study Abroad or a Semester-long Exchange Program you will be required to pay for your:
- tuition fees or student contribution to UniSQ (exchange), or tuition fees to the host university (Study Abroad)
- accommodation fees to the host university or accommodation provider
- Overseas Student Health Cover
- visa application fees
- travel insurance
- flights and transport
- personal spending money and other associated living costs.
The New Colombo Plan Scholarship Program provides opportunities for Australian undergraduates to undertake trimester-based or equivalent study in participating Indo-Pacific locations. These scholarships are awarded once per year and students compete against multiple interested participants from other Australian universities.
Note: the official 2026 NCP Scholarship Guidelines have not yet been released and the below information is based on the 2025 Guidelines, and is subject to change.
The New Colombo Plan Scholarship consists of:
- a travel allowance of up to AUD 3000
- an establishment allowance of up to AUD 3000
- a monthly stipend of up to AUD 3000 per month (for study and internship/mentorship)
- health and travel insurance for the duration of the program.
Other benefits may include:
- Tuition fees at the host uni of up to AUD 15000/semester or AUD 10000/trimester.
- An Asian language training allowance payable to the language institution (if applicable) to the value of AUD 10 000.
Eligibility
You must:
- be an Australian Citizen
- have achieved a minimum 5.0 GPA for your undergraduate course to date
- be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) for non-Indigenous applicants or between 18 and 35 years of age (inclusive) for Indigenous applicants on 1 January 2026
- be enrolled at UniSQ in a bachelor degree or bachelor honours degree
- be eligible to study for one or two trimesters at an Indo-Pacific university and receive credit towards your degree
- provide evidence of demonstrated leadership in the community
- not be a current or dual citizen or permanent resident of their proposed host location
- not be a previous recipient of a New Colombo Plan Scholarship.
Application
Expressions of Interest for the 2026 NCP Scholarship round are open. The expression of interest nomination form was due by 22 June 2025.
Note: all funding is subject to eligibility and availability.
There are limited Erasmus+ grants, generously provided by the European Union’s Erasmus program, available to eligible students applying to study for a semester at the University of Trento in Italy and Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany worth up to EUR 5750 (approx. AUD 9000 each).
Eligibility
You must
- be eligible to receive full time credit towards their UniSQ degree (at least 3 courses approved)
- meet all eligibility requirements for the UniSQ and University of Trento exchange program
- be enrolled in a UniSQ degree
- be selected to receive the Erasmus+ grant and meet the terms and conditions for the funding.
This grant is administered by the University of Trento or by Justus Liebig University and students will only receive payment of the grant when they arrive for their exchange program to Italy or Germany. The funding can be used for associated travel and accommodation costs, and the grant may be paid in instalments for each month the student is enrolled at the partner university.
The OS-HELP loan provides financial assistance to eligible Australian students wishing to study overseas while receiving credit towards their degree.

There are limited Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program (DACKEP) grants, generously provided by the Cheung Kong Group, available to eligible students applying to study for a trimester/s at Akita International University in Japan or Kyung Hee University in South Korea, worth up to AUD 8000.
