  • Gain professional and practical skills in photography that has real-world application through a Diploma of Professional Photography.
  • Learn from professionals as you explore photography techniques and industry-standard software, including Bridge, Lightroom, Photoshop and other programs within the Adobe Creative Suite. You will learn photography genres and styles for advertising and commercial enterprises, photojournalism, PR and events coverage, sports and action, travel, food, fashion, street photography and more.
  • Transform your skills from studio work to a range of fieldwork scenarios.
  • Establish professional goals, build your resilience and develop the skills needed to future-proof your career. Whether your next step is further study or employment, this diploma helps to make that transition easier.
  • A diploma can be completed in just one year and is ideal if you want a university qualification but can’t study for the duration of a bachelor degree. If you decide to continue to study, your diploma is also a stepping-stone to a bachelor degree and successfully completed courses can often contribute to your credits.

Pre-requisites

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C) 

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

If you identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent you may be eligible to enter the Indigenous Higher Education Pathways Program (IHEPP).

Degree structure

To complete this degree students must complete eight units. Most courses (similar to ‘subjects’) are valued at one unit. To study full-time you would usually complete four units per semester.

What are the entry requirements and pathways to entry?

The entry requirements for a Diploma in Photography will vary depending on the learning provider you choose to study with.

At UniSQ, to gain entry into our Diploma of Professional Photography you need to meet a specific ATAR, pre-requisites and assumed knowledge requirements. ‘Assumed knowledge’ is the term we use to explain the minimum level of knowledge we presume you have in some subjects before you start your degree.

Are there any hands-on practical components?

Yes! When you undertake our Media and Communication professional photography diploma at UniSQ you will learn the fundamentals of photography while developing your professional and practical skills in photography.

With our hands-on photographic studio and field work you will gain the practical skills needed to shoot effectively in a range of lighting situations and field work scenarios.  

Can diploma credits be transferred towards a Media and Communications bachelor’s degree?
A Diploma in Photography can be used as a stepping-stone to further study. At UniSQ after you complete your Diploma of Professional Photography you have the option to take the credits from your photography diploma courses and go on to study the Bachelor of Communication and Media.

How you can study a Diploma in Photography will vary depending on the learning provider you choose to study with.

At UniSQ you can study our photography diploma online as an external student. If you want to immerse yourself in on-campus life, you can study at our Toowoomba or Springfield campus. When you study externally, you to learn your subject theory online and come on campus when required.
