Speech pathologists assess and treat infants, children and adults with a wide range of developmental, congenital and acquired delays and disorders in speech, language, voice, fluency, multimodal communication and swallowing.
  • Be guided by experienced academics and industry experts to ensure you’re prepared to deliver care to people in various communities, particularly high need areas such as regional, rural and remote practice, Indigenous and low resource communities.
  • Learn to work closely with other health professionals to deliver comprehensive health care plans that improve the lives of those living with communication disorders. 
  • Be equipped to help patients with a multitude of health care needs. Develop essential skills in a range of courses designed to prepare you for the demands of the speech pathology, from clinical learning in communication and swallowing through to understanding digital health delivery.
  • Benefit from the opportunity to complete your honours in one of two ways: 
    • The practice pathway focuses on industry partnerships and addresses everyday practice topics.
    • The research pathway allows you to create an individual research project (this pathway is dependent on GPA).
      Regardless of which honours pathway you choose, you will be eligible to apply for entry into a higher degree by research.

Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) is pending accreditation by Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) under the 'Qualifying' classification. During this qualifying period, graduate cohorts are ineligible for certified practising membership of Speech Pathology Australia. 'Provisional' accreditation is awarded when UniSQ's Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) achieves accreditation for the first time.

What you'll study

To graduate from the Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours), you must successfully complete 32 units of study.

Degree structure

An undergraduate university degree typically consists of a combination of core, major and elective courses designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and opportunities for an in-depth deeper dive into your chosen field.

Students complete the following core courses

The research Pathways is available to students who have met the eligibility for enrollment based on GPA and available projects. Students will lead the design and implementation of a project to produce an individual piece of work that contributes to the current body of knowledge or research in an area of Speech Pathology.
OR

The Industry Research Pathway offers students the unique opportunity to engage in an industry-based project, allowing them to apply their advanced knowledge and skills to address current challenges in their field. By the end of the pathway, students will have developed a comprehensive understanding of industry practices and will be well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to their professional fields.

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previous studies or relevant work experience. This could reduce the number of courses you need to study to complete your degree.

Degree requirements

As part of the degree, you will need to complete practical placements. Placements in industry provide professional experience, putting the theory into practice, and opportunities to start networking with potential employers. 

All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical placements within this degree.

Entry requirements

You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.

Subject pre-requisites:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent
  • one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Psychology (Units 3 & 4, C) or equivalent.

Please note: Meeting entry requirements does not guarantee admission. Places within this degree are limited by quota. Quota size is determined by the availability of placements. Where the quota is filled, no further places will be offered.

You'll need to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires:

  • Minimum overall score of 8.0, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and writing, and a minimum of 7.5 in reading and listening.

Alternative English language proficiency tests may also be accepted.

During your study

While not needed to apply, you'll need to meet these requirements throughout your studies.

Inherent requirements are fundamental skills, capabilities, and knowledge that you must be able to demonstrate to achieve the essential learning outcomes of the degree, while maintaining the academic integrity of the degree.

  • Blue Card or Working with Children Check
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Workers Screening Card
  • Australian Federal Police Check certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR) certificate
  • First Aid certificate.

Plus evidence of the following immunisations:

  • Hepatitis B immunisation evidence
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunisation evidence
  • Varicella immunisation evidence
  • Pertussis immunisation evidence
  • Influenza immunisation evidence
  • Tuberculosis Risk Assessment
  • COVID-19 vaccinations as directed by health services.

You are responsible for the full cost of your degree and are charged a tuition fee.
