With medals, personal bests and potential international selections on the horizon, the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) student athletes turned heads at the UniSport Nationals Athletics Championships last week.
The results were led by standout performances from UniSQ Elite Athlete Program members, who delivered some of the team’s strongest results across the championships.
Leading the charge was Alex Epitropakis, who claimed gold in the men’s long jump with an outstanding leap of 7.92m.
Taj Gordon added to the medal tally with bronze in the men’s 110m hurdles, clocking a personal best of 14.32 seconds, while also reaching the 100m semi-finals.
Fellow program members also delivered strong performances across the championships, with top-eight finishes for Alexander Bradley (6th in the men’s 5000m race walk) and Camryn Newton-Smith (5th in both women’s javelin and shot put), both recording season-best performances.
Several UniSQ competitors also achieved personal bests during the championships, including Libby Troy in the 800m heats and Ella Coltzau in the women’s 10,000m final.
Strong performances from Elke McAuley, Harry Shelton, Riley Williams and Ben Watts rounded out a competitive showing for the team, highlighting the strength and emerging talent within UniSQ’s student-athlete cohort.
