As a recipient of the 2025 Ipswich Railway RSL Scholarship, Stephanie is thriving in her studies.

For UniSQ Nursing student Stephanie Taylor, a childhood hospital stay sparked a lifelong calling.

Growing up in Fernvale and later Ipswich, Stephanie always felt a strong bond with her local community.

But it was her experience as a young patient with a chronic illness that planted the seed for a career in healthcare.

Inspired by the kindness and care shown by nurses during her most vulnerable moments, Stephanie is now on a mission to offer that same compassion to others.

As a recipient of the 2025 Ipswich Railway RSL Scholarship, Stephanie is not only thriving in her studies but also preparing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and the wider community.

We caught up with her to hear more about her journey.

Can you tell us about your journey to UniSQ?

I grew up in Fernvale and later moved to Ipswich, so I’ve always had a strong connection to my local community. My interest in nursing began during a difficult time in my childhood when I spent a week in hospital over Christmas. Even though it was scary being far from home, the nurses made me feel cared for and safe – it was something I never forgot.

When it came time to choose a university, UniSQ stood out for its strong reputation in nursing education and the supportive environment it offered. It was also close to home, which made it the perfect fit for me.

You were a Head Start student before starting your degree. What was that experience like?

Head Start was such an incredible experience. I completed my Anatomy and Physiology course during the Christmas holidays before Year 11, and it gave me a real taste of university life early on. It helped build my confidence and gave me practical skills like time management and independence.

By the time I started my Bachelor of Nursing, I already felt familiar with UniSQ, which made the transition so much smoother. It definitely confirmed for me that nursing was where I belonged.

What inspired you to study nursing?

I’ve always wanted to work in healthcare, but it was my own experiences as a patient that truly inspired me. I saw firsthand how nurses could make a real difference, not just medically, but emotionally. It wasn’t about job security or income for me, but more about impact.

I want to be that calm, reassuring presence for someone during their hardest days, just like those nurses were for me. That experience shaped who I am, and it’s what drives me to be the best nurse I can be.

You received the Ipswich Railway RSL Scholarship – what does that mean to you?

Receiving the Ipswich Railway RSL Scholarship has been an incredible honour. To be supported by such a respected organisation means so much. Not just financially, but personally. The values of service, community, and resilience that the RSL upholds are values I carry into my studies and future career.

As someone who has experienced illness and understands the importance of compassionate care, I deeply respect our veterans and the health challenges many face. This scholarship motivates me even more to work hard and contribute meaningfully to their wellbeing.

To the RSL, I want to say a heartfelt thank you for believing in students like me. Your support is helping us become the kind of nurses who can make a real difference.

What are your hopes for your future in nursing?

After I complete my Bachelor of Nursing, I hope to work as a Registered Nurse in the Ipswich area. I want to be in a role where I can support people during their toughest times, while continuing to learn and grow. Long term, I’d love to specialise in an area that combines hands-on care with advocacy and patient education.

My goal is to be a nurse who not only treats but truly connects with patients – to make a lasting impact and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system.

Do you see yourself staying in the Ipswich region?

Yes, 100%. Ipswich is home. It’s where I grew up, and I’ve seen how much the local healthcare services mean to the community. I want to give back and be part of a system that truly supports people, especially our older adults and families. The community here is so supportive, and I want to keep that cycle going by helping others live healthier, happier lives.
