Cockpits and compliance: How UniSQ helped land budding aviator his dream first role
After completing his Bachelor of Aviation Management at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), Andrew Yang has found his place in the dynamic world of aviation safety and compliance.
Originally pursuing his private pilot’s licence with aspirations of becoming a commercial pilot, Andrew discovered through his studies that aviation extends far beyond the cockpit.
Today, Andrew applies his knowledge of aviation management and safety systems every day as an Airport Compliance Officer at Archerfield Airport – a multi-faceted aviation hub that plays a vital role in Queensland’s aviation industry and is located just 11 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD.
His journey is a testament to how the right education, supportive mentors, and perseverance can open doors to unexpected and rewarding career paths in the aviation industry.
We spoke with him in between his duties at Archerfield.
Why did you choose to study Aviation at UniSQ?
There were a few key reasons that drew me to UniSQ’s Aviation program. The coursework flexibility and the university’s strong industry connections stood out right away, as did the modern facilities and location. I liked that the program gave me the chance to balance practical flying knowledge with management and business skills. It’s a combination that really set me up to explore different pathways within aviation.
What did you enjoy most about your studies?
I chose UniSQ because the course provided both practical and managerial content right from the first year. That structure helped me understand the full scope of the aviation industry and identify the study path I wanted to follow. I had access to genuine, supportive teaching staff and an incredible flight simulator, which I learned on under the guidance of experienced industry pilots. The teaching staff were supportive throughout my studies and even during the job search process - offering advice that helped me stay motivated and ultimately land my role at Archerfield Airport Corporation.
What was your favourite subject and why?
I really enjoyed learning about aviation from a business perspective – everything from how airports generate revenue to air safety, safety management systems, and aviation law. That subject gave me a deeper understanding of how the industry operates beyond flying. The knowledge I gained has been invaluable in my current role, especially when I took part in my first CASA Airport Audit in October. It was a moment where I could directly apply what I learned in class to real-world aviation operations.
What was the job search process and how did you secure your current position?
Finding the right role took perseverance. I applied for about 50 jobs over a nine-month period before securing my current position. The process could be tough at times, but the support I received from UniSQ’s teaching staff helped me stay positive and strategic. Their advice broadened my job search approach, and that shift in mindset made all the difference.
What advice would you give to other aviation students or graduates?
Go for what you want, but don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen straight away. Aviation can be a niche market, but there are so many opportunities if you keep an open mind. I’d also tell students to give the Aviation Management course a go before deciding that flying is their only option. There’s so much more to the industry than most people realise – from safety and compliance to management and operations. UniSQ helped me see that broader picture, and it’s led me to a role I’m truly passionate about.
Can you tell us more about your role at Archerfield Airport?
At Archerfield Airport, I work within the safety and compliance team, where we ensure that all airport operations meet national regulatory standards. The role is diverse – one day I might be reviewing safety documentation, and the next, I’m out on the airfield conducting inspections or supporting an audit. I get to work alongside a range of operators including flight schools, maintenance crews, and corporate aviation services. It’s a great environment to grow my understanding of how all parts of the industry fit together.
In what ways did your UniSQ studies prepare you for this role?
My time at UniSQ gave me a strong understanding of the systems that keep aviation safe and efficient. The mix of theoretical learning and practical experiences, particularly through simulator training and case studies, helped me develop real-world problem-solving skills. Courses covering safety management systems, compliance, and aviation law have been directly relevant to the work I do now. I often find myself drawing on my coursework when assessing safety risks or contributing to audits.
What has been the most rewarding part of your job so far?
The most rewarding part has been seeing how my studies translate into tangible outcomes that keep people safe and operations running smoothly. Being part of a team that upholds such a critical part of Queensland’s aviation infrastructure feels meaningful. Participating in my first CASA Airport Audit was a highlight – it was a moment where I could confidently apply what I learned at UniSQ in a professional context.
How do you see your career developing from here?
I’m really passionate about continuing in aviation safety and compliance. There’s so much room to grow in this field – from working on larger airport projects to eventually taking on leadership roles within safety management. My goal is to keep building my technical and regulatory knowledge and contribute to improving aviation safety standards across the industry. UniSQ gave me the foundation to start that journey, and now Archerfield is giving me the real-world platform to grow it further.
