Jessica van Vonderen will host the 2025 UniSQ Alumni Awards on October 23.

As one of Australia’s most respected journalists and a proud University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) alumnus, Jessica van Vonderen is set to return to where her story began – this time, centre stage.

The award-winning ABC journalist will take on the role of Master of Ceremonies at this year’s UniSQ Alumni Awards at UniSQ Brisbane, bringing her professional polish and personal connection to the celebration of alumni achievement.

Named Alumnus of the Year (Creative Industries and Humanities) in 2022, Jessica credits UniSQ for helping shape her path – from student reporter to one of the country’s most recognisable newsroom faces.

We caught up with her ahead of the event to hear her reflections.

How did your time at UniSQ help shape your career and contribute to your professional achievements?

It made me job ready. The course work was steeped in practice and reflective of what really happens in a newsroom. We had to go out into the community and find stories, interview people, meet strict deadlines, and compile television and radio bulletins.

Through the work experience program, I spent a couple of weeks at ABC Radio in Toowoomba, which gave me that vital foot in the door and ultimately led to a full-time job.

You were honoured as the Alumnus of the Year (Creative Industries and Humanities) in 2022. Can you share what that recognition meant to you personally and professionally?

I was surprised and delighted. Personally, it became a mini trip down memory lane as I reflected on my career – the stories I’ve told, and the people I’ve enjoyed meeting and working with along the way.

Professionally, it’s so rewarding! I know a lot of other great journos who have come from UniSQ, so to be recognised in that way was extra special.

And personally, I hope it also serves as a thanks to all the people who’ve supported me along the way – my family, friends and colleagues.

What does it mean to you to be recognised by your alma mater as one of its most outstanding alumni?

It’s certainly humbling. The talent and achievement of the other recipients in the room that night in 2022 was amazing and inspiring. It made me proud of what regional Australia has to offer.

This year, you’re returning as the emcee for our alumni celebration at UniSQ Brisbane. What inspired you to come back and be part of this special event?

I have really fond memories of uni and I’m excited to see what incredible things this year’s alumni have achieved and for them to be recognised.

I love stepping into university environments – you can feel the potential and positivity in the air.

What advice would you offer current students or recent graduates who are aspiring to build a career in journalism?

Consume news voraciously. Gain as many skills across as many platforms as you can. Do work experience. Be curious, enthusiastic, respectful and gutsy.

And say yes to opportunities – each one could be another step.
