The University of Southern Queensland joined with Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland to mark World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10) with an Out of the Shadows Walk at the University’s Gumbi Gumbi Gardens.

The walk brought the community together to remember those lost to suicide, support those experiencing emotional distress, and walk in hope for a brighter future. It was held ahead of R U OK? Day (September 11), underlining the importance of conversations and connection during this significant week for mental health awareness.

UniSQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen Nelson said the University was honoured to host such a meaningful community event.

“UniSQ is proud to partner with Lifeline on this important occasion,” Professor Nelson said.

“Creating spaces where people feel safe, supported and connected is vital.

“Events like this remind us that by standing together, we can help reduce stigma and encourage people to reach out for help.”

Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland CEO Rachelle Patterson said the event shone a light on the power of community support.

“Behind every statistic there is a person, and we acknowledge the wide impact suicide has on families, workplaces and communities,” Ms Patterson said.

“Regular conversations help people feel understood and valued and create connection and belonging, meaning those who are struggling feel safe to reach out for help.”
