Aspiring humanitarian wins prestigious award.

After escaping war-torn Iraq to a Turkish refugee camp, Farhan Khudir and his family were finally granted a humanitarian visa to Australia four years ago.

Now, the third-year University of Southern Queensland student has been awarded the 2023 W.H. Groom Centenary of Toowoomba Scholarship for his contribution to the local community.

The Law and Arts degree student said the scholarship would help encourage him to pursue his dream as a migrant lawyer or agent.

“I want to be able to help the families like mine who are in search of a better life,” Mr Khudir said.

“The University of Southern Queensland has allowed me to pursue my dreams and helped make them a reality.”

Having completed his education at Toowoomba State High School, Mr Khudir started his university journey through a Tertiary Preparation Pathway, eventually gaining entry into his preferred degree.

“I never felt like I belonged in my country of origin, but I have called Australia home from day one,” he said.

“I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
