Gender-based violence

Gender-based violence includes any behaviour — physical or non-physical — that targets someone based on their gender and causes harm, fear, or loss of control. It can happen to anyone, in any setting.

Common forms include:

  • Sexual harassment or assault
  • Domestic and family violence
  • Stalking or online abuse
  • Discrimination or intimidation.

All forms of gender-based violence are unacceptable at UniSQ. Support is available, even if the incident happened outside the University.

What is Gender-Based Violence?
Find out what gender-based violence is in this short video by the Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre and how gender inequality and victim-blaming can make it harder for people to seek help.

Support for you

If you’ve experienced gender-based violence, you can choose to disclose your experience to Safer Communities. Our team will listen without judgment, support you confidentially, and help you understand your options. This might include connecting you with wellbeing services, arranging academic support or adjustments, or guiding you through reporting pathways, whether within UniSQ or to external authorities. You’re in control of what happens next, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

If you’re part of a UniSQ investigation related to gender-based violence, whether you’ve made a report or have been named in one, it’s important to know what to expect.

UniSQ is committed to handling these matters with care, fairness, and confidentiality. We understand that being involved in an investigation can feel overwhelming, and we’re here to support you throughout the process.

To help you understand your rights, responsibilities, and what happens next, we’ve created two guides:
