Do you have an itch for change, the urge to venture into a different role or industry, and want the excitement of stepping into a brand new career? Whether you’re looking at a career change at 40 or 20 it can be hard to know where to start. If you're contemplating how to change careers and exploring career change ideas, we can help!

Take a look at our tips and hints to make your transition to starting a new job as smooth as possible.

Self reflection

Before charging into a huge decision such as a career change, it’s a good idea to take some time to reflect on where you are now and what your end game is. Why are you considering career change? Is it the desire for personal growth, to follow a passion, or the need for a fresh challenge? Understanding your ‘whys’ lays the foundation for a successful career transition.

You've developed many skills you might not even be aware of throughout your working life. These transferrable skills can be invaluable when pitching yourself to new employers. The key is to identify the skills that can seamlessly translate into your new career. For example, if you're a pro at project management, your organisational skills will be highly valued in various industries. It’s easy to underestimate the value of transferable skills, so the process of being able to identify and capitalise on these skills is a great place to start when considering a career transition. Planning your new career

Researching

Knowledge is power, and Google is your best friend. Take an in-depth look into your prospective career. What are the industry trends? What skills are in demand? Are there specific qualifications required? Equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions.

If you're not sure what your first steps should be when researching your career change, UniSQ’s Career Finder is the perfect place to start. With our Career Finder you can search for careers by industry or simply browse for a career you have in mind. Each career includes key industry stats such as average income and future demands. We even match careers with relevant UniSQ degrees, so you know what you need to study when you’re looking at how to change careers.

Networking

Networking isn't just a buzzword; it's the underrated secret to career success. Attend industry events, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and don't be shy about reaching out for informational interviews. You'd be surprised how many doors to new career opportunities will open with a simple "hello".

UniSQ Careers and Employability team run numerous events, (in person and online) giving our students the chance to network with employers. Networking events can be intimidating, but are a great opportunity to build connections and learn more about your chosen field. And if you need any extra guidance along the way, don’t forget that the Careers and Employability team are here to offer support and career change advice when you need it.

Another less commonly known form of networking is to seek out a mentor. Having guidance from someone who's walked the path you're about to tread means they can provide insights, share their experiences, and offer invaluable advice.

When you’re a student at UniSQ you will have the opportunity to become involved in our Career Mentoring Program. It’s designed to connect UniSQ students (the mentee) with an experienced industry professional (the mentor) in order to build your employability skills and prepare you for your career transition.

Navigating the highs and lows

Change makes most of us nervous, and that's perfectly OK. Embrace the uncertainty and use it as fuel for your journey. Remember, you are capable of amazing things outside your comfort zone. Accepting that your decision to pursue a new career will not always be smooth sailing is going to benefit you in the long run. You’ll learn, grow, and build resilience - this hard work and determination will be worth it when you reach your career change goals.

Launching your new career

Starting your new career looks different for everyone, so don’t feel like you don’t have to dive in headfirst into your career change. Depending on your circumstances, dabbling in your new career while still at your current job may be a sensible choice. Whether it's freelancing, interning, or volunteering, gaining hands-on experience can bolster your confidence and make you more marketable when you decide to apply for jobs.

You’ve perfected your CV, potentially upskilled and talked to all the right people. Now it’s time to put yourself out there in job interviews. Prepare for potential curveball questions about your career change. Showcase your passion, highlight your transferable skills, and let your enthusiasm for the new role shine through. Confidence is your secret weapon.

If you don’t get an offer for that first job, don’t let it deter you. Consider job intervciews as another learning opportunity to develop your communication skills and confidence.

Expect setbacks and roadblocks along the way. Building resilience is key to weathering the storms of change. Stay positive, learn from challenges, and keep moving forward.

When there is a job offer is on the table. Don't hesitate to negotiate. Consider factors beyond salary, like flexible work hours or professional development opportunities. It's your career – make sure it aligns with your values.

You've successfully navigated the twists and turns of a career change and are ready to embark on the exciting journey of starting a new job. Take a moment to celebrate your achievements, and then dive headfirst into your new adventure. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

With the right mindset, strategy, and determination, you can navigate the path to your dream career and the excitement of starting a new job. The University of Southern Queensland is here to support you every step of the way. So, what are you waiting for? Your new career awaits!
