  • Build the English reading and writing skills you need to succeed at university. UniSQ’s English for Academic Purposes program enables domestic students from a migrant or refugee background to gain the English language skills required for entry to UniSQ Ready.
  • Strengthen essential skills — including grammar, vocabulary and spelling — so you’re able to understand academic tasks and answer them with confidence.
  • Learn how to read and analyse texts, take helpful notes, summarise key ideas, and manage time to complete academic tasks.
  • Increase your English level from IELTS 4.5 to 5.5 in two 7-week courses with practical activities to help you plan tasks and write clear sentences and paragraphs.
  • Progress into UniSQ Ready, a pathway program designed to expand your academic skills, and future university study with a solid foundation in academic English, gaining practical strategies for drafting, editing, and proofreading your work.

What you'll study

To graduate from the English for Academic Purposes, you must successfully complete 4 units of study.

Degree structure

An English language program strengthens your communication skills and builds your confidence to participate actively in classes and group discussions. It also equips you with critical thinking and academic vocabulary, making writing assignments easier.

Students must complete at least one of the following courses:

After completion of this English language pathway program, you can go on to study the UniSQ Ready pathway program.

Entry requirements

You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this pathway program.

  • Completion of senior secondary schooling in the home country or Year 12 in an Australian High School or completed 'A' levels.

English language entry requirements

To study the EAP0111 course, you'll need an entry level IELTS score of 4.5, or equivalent.

To study the EAP0112 course, you'll need an entry level IELTS score of 5.0, or equivalent. 

If you have not completed an IELTS test, an alternative entry test will be provided which needs to be completed before being considered for admission. Find out more about English language proficiency tests and requirements.

Fees and scholarships

If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen (resident in Australia), holder of either Australian Permanent Residency or Australian Permanent Humanitarian visas, you have access to fee-free places in this program.

Fee-free places are granted for the duration of the program.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a short English language program that focuses on improving your academic English skills which is often very different from everyday conversational English.

Compared to general English language courses, EAP prepares you for academic communication and entry-level study at university. You'll learn academic writing (essays, assignments), critical reading of articles and texts, note-taking and comprehension from lectures, and giving presentations.

UniSQ's English for Academic Purposes program is free for eligible domestic students. This bridging course gives you access to academic support for your studies, course materials and teaching staff who are dedicated to helping you improve your English proficiency to become prepared for university level study.

If you are an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or an Australian Permanent Humanitarian visa holder, you will be eligible for a Commonwealth supported, fee-free place in this English language prep course.

The duration of an English for Academic Purposes language course will vary depending on the education provider you choose.

At UniSQ, our English for Academic Purposes will take you a little over three months to complete (14 weeks). You can start in one of four different intakes throughout the year which allows you to choose a start date that fits in with your work and life commitments.
