What you'll study

To graduate from the Bachelor of Film and Screen Production, you must successfully complete 24 units of study.

Degree structure

An undergraduate university degree typically consists of a combination of core, major and elective courses designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and opportunities for an in-depth deeper dive into your chosen field.

There are 2 x 12-unit majors to choose from - a Film Production major or a Screen Production major. Students may only enrol in one.

The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in another discipline in the School of Creative Arts (providing entry requirements are met), or from one of the recommended majors listed below for areas outside of the creative arts. Students wishing to undertake an unlisted major from elsewhere within UniSQ will require consultation and approval from the School of Creative Arts programs director. Recommended second majors from outside of SoCA for this program are: Communication and Media Studies, Photography, Journalism, and English Literature. Please note that students may choose to add more film courses as part of their suite of complimentary studies. For more information, consult with the School of Creative Arts Programs Director and/or the Film discipline convenor.

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previous studies or relevant work experience. This could reduce the number of courses you need to study to complete your degree.

There are many ways to be considered for entry into a UniSQ degree based on your education, work experience and relevant personal attributes.

To be eligible

You need to satisfy the following requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.

ATAR 60.00
This is the lowest adjusted score to which UniSQ made an offer in Trimester 1, 2025. Meeting the lowest adjusted score doesn't guarantee admission.

To study this degree, we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

Non-ATAR entry

If you don't have an ATAR, you can attend an interview and supply a portfolio and written statement.

Interview information

Applicants who don't have an ATAR must partake in an interview and provide:

  • a head shot style photo of themselves
  • a school exit statement, or evidence of previous education standard achieved
  • a portfolio of examples of your films, and scripts or media works at interview
  • a written statement (500 words) addressing your goals and aspirations in the film and media industries and what area  interests you the most (e.g. director, producer, editor, cinematographer, sound recordist, art director etc.). Please supply your submission at interview.

Application steps to follow:

  2. Please register for an interview. Once registered, we will review your portfolio and invite you to be interviewed.

  • IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 6.0 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Blue card

It is a requirement that Queensland-based students hold a current positive notice indicating that they are deemed suitable for working with children and young people whilst studying the Bachelor of Film and Screen Production. Commonwealth supported AUD 16,992
The Federal Government contributes to the cost of your degree, and you need to pay a student contribution.
  • This estimated 2025 annual fee is based on the current average rate for your first year of study (8 units per year) and does not include cost of materials such as textbooks, additional costs or the Student Services and Amenities fee

You may be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as part of your degree cost.

Payment options

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. Find out if you are eligible for HECS-HELP.

While they both sound similar there is a distinction between the two Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production (or equivalent) majors. Film Production has a focus on creating films made for the big screen whereas in Screen Production you'll be making media for the small screens such as TV, computers, and phones to be distributed on streaming platforms and social media.
