There is a new Historical Archives exhibition titled ‘Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Opening of the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens’ on the 3rd level of the UniSQ Toowoomba Library.
The University of Southern Queensland officially opened the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens Indigenous cultural site in 2013.
The Gardens cover approximately 2.2 hectares of land adjacent to the northern side of the University main entrance and feature extensive plantings of Indigenous flora used by the local Aboriginal communities for food and medicine. It also includes a number of small and large teaching spaces.
In the exhibition you will find photographs, articles and the awards won by the Gardens over the years.
For over a century, what is now UniSQ Ipswich, operated as the precinct of an institution catering for people with mental disabilities. The ‘Challinor Centre memorabilia’ exhibition shows a variety of artefacts used during the era.
The facility closed in 1994 and the site Heritage listed in 1996 and the precinct was re-purposed for use as a university campus. The University of Queensland occupied the site from 1998-2014, with the University of Southern Queensland acquiring the precinct on 7 January 2015.
