Calling lamb containment feeders

19 January 2026

Do you want to better understand lamb performance on your farm and how it stacks up across the industry?

The Armidale Node of the SQNNSW Innovation Hub and AHN Consulting is seeking a cohort of producers to take part in Paddock to Pen, a Lamb Containment Feeding Industry Observations project, bringing together real-world systems to capture insights that matter on-farm.

If you’re containment feeding lambs and keen to improve performance, resilience and decision-making, we’d love to hear from you.

“Feeding lambs is an exciting part of the industry that has a positive impact on drought resilience, soil and pasture health, animal health and welfare and lamb supply into the food chain,” AHN Consulting’s Dr Jill Kelly says.

“There is huge potential to learn more, do better and finish more lambs. This is a project that will have a good look at the state of the industry and what’s going on in the pens, so we can identify areas for development in the future.”

What we’re looking for

Producers who:

  • Are containment feeding lambs in 2026
  • Are based in Northern NSW or Southern Queensland
  • Use a range of lamb weights, breeds, rations and management styles
  • Are enthusiastic, reliable and committed to best-practice
  • Have good data collection skills

What’s involved

Participants will feed lambs in containment using their usual farm management, while collecting data and gaining new insights into:

  • Nutrition and production
  • Animal health
  • Profitability.

Selected Host Producers will receive access to Optiweigh and Livestock Junction software to monitor livestock performance and collate data.

Why get involved?

You’ll be part of a producer learning network, helping shape best practice guidelines to support decision-making during drought and market opportunities. Project findings will be shared through industry publications, grower communications and a final field day showcasing key results.
