Overview

  • Are you motivated by resolving legal aspects of family issues? Family law is an important area of legal practice intended to protect family relationships, ensure the welfare of children and provide legal resolution for domestic issues, such as divorce, property division and spousal support.   
  • In the Master of Laws (Family Law), you will increase your research skills as well as extend your legal knowledge in Australian family law, family violence and child protection law, international family law, estate planning and accredited general mediation.  
  • You will have the option to study a course (subject) that includes the necessary training to assist you to become a Nationally Accredited Mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation Standards (NMAS) and enable progression to register with an Australian Recognised Mediator Body. 
  • Complete this degree in one year when studying full-time or two years part-time, study completely online and choose from three different start times throughout the year (February, May or September).

Further study

Successful completion of the Master of Laws (Family Law) will qualify you to apply for the Master of Research or PhD entry.

Career outcomes

As a graduate of the Master of Laws (Family Law) you will be prepared for a range of careers in either legal practice, advocacy, academia or policy work. Specific careers may include family law solicitor, Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP), independent children’s lawyer, Legal Aid family lawyer, family court registrar, child protection lawyer, domestic violence advocate or policy advisor.  

Entry requirements

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Laws (Honours); a Juris Doctor; a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, or an international equivalent.
  • Applicants who do not hold a law degree but have an equivalent qualification approved by a legal profession admissions board are also eligible to apply for entry.
  • If you have completed the UniSQ Juris Doctor you will receive 50% specific credit towards particular components of the Master of Laws. If you have completed a Juris Doctor degree from another institute, you are able to apply for credit as per the Credit and Exemption policy.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study the English for Academic Purposes EAP3 pathway program through the Union Institute of Language (UIL).

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.
