Placements - Nursing and Midwifery
Starting your placement is an exciting step toward your future career, and there can be a lot to get organised.
Before you begin, it’s important to read the your program's placement guide (see the placement guide section on this page) to understand what’s required in your field, and complete all mandatory documents on time. These documents are part of your professional toolkit - you’ll likely need to update them throughout your career, so getting them done now shows you're ready to step into a professional setting.
Remember:
- Nursing and Midwifery programs require multiple mandatory documents, which can take considerable time to gather, particularly if you’re starting from the beginning. Please allow at least six months before your first placement course deadline to begin collecting and submitting these documents.
- The Student Guild offers discounted first aid and CPR courses to help bring down your costs.
- Missing a deadline can delay your placement and affect your progress, so make sure you submit everything on time. We’ll send reminders and updates to your student email (UMail), so keep an eye on your inbox or forward your emails to your personal account.
- To stay organised, keep track of what you’ve completed and what’s still left to do. A checklist or planner can help you manage your tasks and feel confident as you get ready.
InPlace is UniSQ’s online system for managing placements. Once you enrol in your first-year courses, your account is created automatically overnight. You’ll use InPlace throughout your Work Integrated Learning (WIL) journey to stay organised and on track.
InPlace features and tips
- Upload your mandatory documents to InPlace. Remember, some need to be renewed each year, so keep them organised and up to date. Check your placement guide below for more information.
- Find links to important websites and documents that explain what’s required for your placement.
- Once your placement is confirmed, you can check your placement details in InPlace. You’ll see the location, dates, and any special instructions.
- For some programs, you can access your placement orientation schedule and roster directly in InPlace. Be sure to check this before your placement starts.
- Some disciplines use InPlace to share assessment reports. These help you track your progress and understand what’s expected.
Tips for using InPlace
Log in regularly to check for updates or new tasks. Keep your documents organised so you can upload them quickly, and set reminders for deadlines and renewals. If you’re ever unsure, reach out to the WIL team - we’re here to help.
UniSQ policies help create a safe, respectful, and professional environment - both on campus and during placements. Here’s how each one applies to your Work Integrated Learning experience:
- Student Code of Conduct Policy
Sets expectations for respectful, responsible behaviour. On placement, this means acting professionally and treating others with courtesy. - Academic Integrity Policy
Covers honesty in your academic work. During placement, this includes accurately reporting your activities and avoiding misrepresentation. - Student Discrimination, Bullying, Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Response Procedure
Ensures a safe and inclusive environment. If you experience or witness inappropriate behaviour during placement, this policy outlines how to report it. - Student Grievance Resolution Policy
Provides a process for raising concerns. If something goes wrong during your placement, this policy helps you seek support and resolution. - Work Health and Safety
Ensures your physical safety. You’ll need to follow safety procedures at your placement site and report any risks or incidents. - Assessment of Special Circumstances Procedure
Supports you if unexpected events affect your ability to complete placement requirements. You can apply for adjustments or extensions under this policy. - Student General Conduct Policy
Reinforces respectful behaviour and responsible decision-making. It applies to all interactions during placement, including with staff, clients, and peers. - Work Integrated Learning Activities Policy
Specifically outlines the expectations and responsibilities for students undertaking WIL activities, including placement eligibility, supervision, and conduct.
Your safety is important - whether you're on-site, travelling to and from your placement, or responding to an incident. A safe environment allows you to focus on learning and developing professionally without unnecessary risks.
Creating a safe placement environment
UniSQ’s WIL team works closely with placement partners to ensure sites are safe and well-prepared. This includes reviewing placement locations and maintaining open communication to address any concerns.
You’ll also receive safety information from your placement provider. If you don’t receive an induction or orientation that covers essential procedures, such as emergency contacts or evacuation plans, contact your Course Coordinator or the WIL team.
Your role in staying safe
During your placement, it’s important to follow all safety protocols provided by your placement site and UniSQ. If you experience or witness an incident or hazard:
- Report it to your supervisor immediately
- Take appropriate steps to reduce any risks
- Contact your Course Coordinator or the WIL team if further support is needed
Travel Safety
Plan your travel routes carefully and stay aware of your surroundings when commuting to and from your placement. Government websites like QLDTraffic can provide information on live traffic conditions. If you have concerns about travel safety, reach out for advice or support.
Need Help?
If you feel unsafe or unsure at any point during your placement, contact your Course Coordinator or the WIL team. We’re here to support you and ensure your placement experience is safe, respectful, and rewarding.
