Overview

  • UniSQ offers English language programs for students from non-English speaking backgrounds. The English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) is designed to improve your English language skills.
  • You can study ELICOS for personal reasons, as a pathway to future study, or to improve your career.
  • As an ELICOS student you can access great teaching and support in a friendly caring environment. ELICOS classes are small and you will have the opportunity to build your confidence and make new friends.
  • ELICOS includes three levels of English study. You could start your studies in any of these levels, depending on your current English language skills or your IELTS results.  ELICOS is flexible to suit your needs and we will work with you to start your studies at the best level for you.

Further study

ELICOS aims to prepare you for further study. When you complete the Intermediate level of ELICOS, you could choose to go on to study UniSQ’s English for Academic Purposes to prepare you for university study.

Professional accreditation

Our English for Academic Purposes program is endorsed by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS).

Career outcomes

  • As part of this program, you will develop both the English skills and confidence to continue your journey along the path to university studies.

Entry requirements

  • Resident status: students on international student visas or students from non-English speaking backgrounds resident in Australia.
  • Minimum academic requirements: completion of senior secondary schooling in the home country. For domestic students, please contact UniSQ Colleges.

Students without an IELTS score are given the UniSQ Placement Test before starting classes to determine which level of English is suitable for them.

Level IELTSentry1
1 - Elementary 3.5
2 - Pre-intermediate 4.0
3 - Intermediate 4.5

Students are required to provide evidence of their English language proficiency on an internationally recognised test of English prior to arrival. On arrival students will then be tested using the UniSQ placement test to determine allocation to either Level 1, 2 or 3. Students with an IELTS score below 3.5 will not be accepted to the ELICOS program.

Degree structure

ELICOS is offered at 3 levels. Students will be placed in an appropriate level according to provided evidence of their English language skills or according to results of a placement test.

Progress to the next level is determined by a student's success in exams and assignments. Students can study in ELICOS for up to 32 weeks depending on their level of proficiency at entry.

Level IELTS Entry IELTS Exit
1 - Elementary 3.5 4.0
2 - Pre-intermediate 4.0 4.5
3 - Intermediate 4.5 5.0

Students completing the Intermediate level who wish to continue their English language studies for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs may undertake the English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Students at the Elementary level will need a minimum of 30 weeks of ELICOS followed by 20 weeks of EAP to proceed to degree study.

Refer to the UniSQ Handbook for courses to be studied and recommended enrolment patterns.
