For some (maybe many) deciding what you want to study after high school is tough. There are so many options - how are you supposed to know what you want to do for the rest of your life at age 18 anyway?
London Elliott's answer to this is go to Open Day.
“I came to three UniSQ Open Days, one in 2016, 2017, and 2018. At the first Open Day I was just looking for career inspiration as I had no idea what I wanted to do,” says London.
Attending Open Day earlier in his schooling life helped London narrow down his career options. It was also a great chance for him to get to know his future teachers.
London says, “I won the chance to use the flight simulator in Springfield at the second Open Day I went to. And, at the third, I remember having a great conversation with two of the lecturers in the film department, one of which I went on to work with in 2021!”
Go to as many as you can
Open Day is the best way to get a feel for the campus and is a great chance to picture yourself studying at the university. London’s advice is to attend as many open days as you can.
“I didn’t think I would be at university at all. I lost hope in Year 10 since I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future. It was UniSQ’s Open Day that opened my eyes to the world of aviation,” says London.
If you don’t know what you want to do as a career, Open Days are your opportunity to explore different careers. Lecturers and current students from every area of the university are there on the day which means you can ask them all the questions you need.

It was understanding possible career outcomes and getting to chat one-on-one with lecturers that gave him a direction and got him through high school. After his first Open Day, London decided he wanted to be a pilot.
After starting a Bachelor of Aviation with UniSQ, he realised that film was actually where his passion lay. He now studies a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in film and animation (now Bachelor of Film and Screen Production) and is loving it.
“The best thing about Open Day was getting to speak to people and creating those connections with lecturers, students and other families,” he says.
“Even though I did end up changing degrees, a reason I chose to do film was because of the interactions I had with those lecturers in 2018. I’m really glad I went to those Open Days, if anything, I wish I went to more.”
