Australians will experience the shortest day of the year today marking the Winter Solstice (in Brisbane we'll have three and a half hours less daylight than Summer Solstice).
Astrophysicist Professor Jonti Horner says the tilt of the earth and the specific point that it will be at in its oval-shaped trajectory around the sun mean the southern hemisphere will be at its furthest point from the sun.
