Daniel

Focusing the lens on a passion-driven career
Daniel is working with his videography equipment, smiling.

Fascinated by narrative and creativity, Daniel graduated from UniSQ with a Bachelor of Mass Communication (Media Production and Journalism). During his final semester, Daniel began his career as a Trainee Director at WIN Television Toowoomba, which soon saw him directing live news bulletins and becoming one of the station’s youngest directors.

Daniel went on to pursue a freelance career in film and cinematography, shooting corporate videos, television commercials, documentaries, music videos, short films and television drama. He won an Australian Cinematographer’s Society award (Queensland branch) for his work on SBS’s Love Patrol, which was shot in Vanuatu.

With diverse experience in creating moving images, Daniel branched out to stills photography, focusing on advertising work, fashion, food, interior design and architecture.

'I want my images to communicate effectively but I also want them to affect powerfully.'

A casual university teaching career soon opened Daniel’s mind to the possibility of studying a PhD in cinematography. While the research was a change of pace for Daniel, he enjoyed the work immensely and was nominated for the Chancellor’s Medal upon the completion of his doctorate in 2018. Daniel now works at UniSQ, continuing to share his passion for creativity through producing educational digital media for the University.

'University allowed me to investigate and explore concepts and ideas, giving me time to create, but most importantly to create myself, to form who I wanted to be.'
