A recipient of a Nursing Clinical Placement Bursary, Amy completed her UniSQ nursing degree and final clinical placement in 2019 at the Roma Hospital in western Queensland.
Growing up in the Lockyer Valley then moving to Brisbane to study, Amy originally started a biomedical science degree but changed to nursing in search of a more hands-on career.
‘I wanted to work in a role where I could listen to people and help them, rather than spend my time looking in a microscope.’
Going rural for her final placement has taught Amy independence and brought her personal growth. During her time in Roma, she enjoyed the team environment that existed in both the rural health setting and the broader community.
Being financially independent and living away from home, the Nursing Clinical Placement Bursary took a lot of pressure off Amy, allowing her to focus on her placement without worrying about working on weekends to make ends meet in Roma.
‘It actually allowed me time to really enjoy my placement, get the most out of it and explore the local area.’
‘I hope these bursaries continue to be supported so future nurses like me can gain the knowledge and experience required to be able to share our passion and knowledge with others.’
