Overview

  • Build your skills for on air presenting, producing, and the many roles available in broadcast radio such as writing, sales and marketing, podcasting and other aspects of the audio business.
  • You will have access to the well-equipped radio studios to develop your audio productions and benefit from UniSQ’s very own 24/7 radio station, Phoenix Radio.
  • Study the only Bachelor degree in broadcast radio offered in Queensland, and one of very few in Australia.
  • Meet the right people in industry, understand what is required at each station and benefit from relationships with Southern Cross Austereo, ABC radio, Grant Broadcasting, NOVA and community broadcasters. Learn within industry placement throughout your studies.

Career outcomes

  • You will be job ready as you transition into full time or part-time work. Pursue a career in broadcast and online radio and podcasting, covering technical roles, production, on-air presentation, copywriting, editing, media management, audio production and all associated roles.
  • Podcast and audio content creation is a potential pathway for career progression as the corporate world uses and values this as a means of telling their story.

Pre-requisites

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C) 

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

  • If you don't have an ATAR, you can attend an interview and supply a portfolio and written statement.

Interview information

Applicants who don't have an ATAR must partake in an interview and provide:

  • a head shot style photo of themselves
  • a school exit statement, or evidence of previous education standard achieved
  • a portfolio of film work, broadcast visual or sound work.
  • a written statement (500 words) outlining your experience within these media and/or an explanatory statement that describes your portfolio. Please supply your submission at interview.

Note: It is a requirement that Queensland-based students hold a current positive notice indicating that they are deemed suitable for working with children and young people whilst studying the Bachelor of Television and Radio Production. If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you may be able to use these qualifications to meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

*The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in another discipline in the School of Creative Arts (e.g. Visual Art, Music, Theatre, Digital Media, Film Production etc. providing all entry requirements are met) or from a recommended major outside of the creative arts, such as Advertising, or Journalism, or another major in consultation and with approval from the degree director.

^While it is not possible to complete 12-unit majors in both Television and Radio, you may choose to add more courses in Television or Radio as part of your suite of complimentary studies (e.g. a student undertaking the 12-unit major in Radio could do a minor in Television, and vice versa).

Residential schools

All students will have the opportunity to come on-campus for residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials to gain practical experience, use facilities and specialist equipment, and meet staff and other students.

Professional experience

You will have opportunities to present programs on Phoenix Radio and to gain experience inside commercial radio stations or the ABC. Guest speakers will also attend campus to provide insights and share experiences.

Note: This program is offered chiefly at Springfield campus with a variety of on‐campus and online course offers. The second and third-year practical courses in both Television and Radio are available on-campus at Springfield and via external offering at Toowoomba where residential schools will be held.
