What is a spatial science degree?

The study of spatial science focuses on measuring the physical fabrics of the Earth, which requires understanding and analysing the visualisation of our environment. During your Associate Degree of Spatial Science you will learn how to measure, analyse and manage the Earth’s surface, using a board range of theoretical and technical knowledge.

At UniSQ you can choose from three specialisations as part of our spatial science course.

Geographic Information Systems - Explore GIS technologies and work with satellite imagery and laser measurements for 3D mapping and visualisation of the natural and built environment. Upon completion, you will also be eligible to apply for membership with the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute Australia.

Surveying – Learn to collect, store, adapt and manipulate spatial data to communication effectively with industry professionals, clients and your community. When you graduate with an Associate Degree of Spatial Science (Surveying), you will be eligible for registration as a Surveying Associate with the Surveyors Board of Queensland as well as membership with the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute Australia.

Urban and Regional Planning – Make an impactful difference to your communities by studying a spatial science course that gives you the skills and knowledge needed to prepare plans for residential, retail and industrial areas, as well as conduct environmental impact assessments.

Regardless of which Associate Degree of Spatial Science major you choose to study, you will benefit from on-campus residential school which gives you the opportunity to attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials, use the facilities and meet staff and other students.

Become confident in your understanding of the underlying principles and concepts fundamental to spatial science and use these newly found skills to undertake further study such as a Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology, Bachelor of Spatial Science (Honours) or a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Honours).
