Felicity Purcell Nursing Bursary

In 2023, UniSQ will offer one Felicity Purcell Nursing Bursary to support a student commencing their studies in the Bachelor of Nursing.

Felicity Purcell was a nursing student at UniSQ, graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing in 1994. Well trained and committed, she had a very successful career; first as a paediatric nurse in major public hospitals, and then in the broader medical field both here and overseas, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry where she was widely respected. Following the detection of the early symptoms of breast cancer, Felicity underwent the best medical treatment available, however, sadly, her breast cancer advanced, and she died at 33 years of age in 2008.

This bursary promotes the very best traditions of nursing’s ethos of care for others, as embodied by Felicity Purcell. Specifically, it provides financial assistance to a nursing student who, like Felicity, comes from a rural or remote background.

The bursary will have a maximum value of $4000 to be paid in one instalment.

Applicants must:

be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or permanent humanitarian visa holder
be from a regional or remote area within Queensland
be commencing their studies at UniSQ in the Bachelor of Nursing in Study Period 1 2023 (e.g., Semester 1 2023)
be enrolled in a minimum of 3 study units in Study Period 1 2023 (e.g., Semester 1 2023)
be enrolled on-campus, external or online.

As this is a commencing student scholarship, applicants are not required to have accepted/be enrolled at UniSQ at time of application.

Applicants must:

submit a personal statement (500 words maximum) outlining:
- what influenced and motivated you to choose your intended study program at UniSQ
- how you see yourself as a future professional within your field
- your desire and strong interest to practise nursing in regional and remote Queensland.
provide evidence to show you have a permanent address in or have relocated to study from a regional or remote area within Queensland according to the Australian Statistical Geographic Standard Remoteness Areas 2016 - refer Health Workforce Locator map.
provide evidence you have an income at or below the financial threshold limits as directed in the application process.
provide evidence of academic achievement as directed in the application process:
- high school report card or post-secondary academic history (transcript of results) from outside UniSQ, e.g., school, TAFE etc.

*Extra consideration will be given to those students from outer regional, remote or very remote areas.

Please Note: If an applicant holds other UniSQ awarded scholarships, this may be taken into consideration in selection. There are some scholarships that cannot be held together.

Application must be made via the UniSQ Scholarships Online Application Management System.
