Overview: This presentation will provide HDR students with an overview of mixed methods principles, benefits and challenges within the scope of a HDR program. Using real-life research examples, it will explore key components of mixed methods research that are often not well discussed, such as methods of data analysis and integration. Strategies for presenting mixed methods research within a HDR thesis will also be examined. There will be an opportunity for students to bring questions about their own work.

Learning Objectives: 
After attending the seminar participants will be able to;

  • explain the key characteristics of mixed methods research.
  • discuss options for analysis of data in a mixed methods study.
  • identify and describe strategies to integrate data in a mixed methods study.
  • identify and describe strategies to present mixed methods research within a Doctoral thesis.
  • explain the benefits and challenges of undertaking mixed methods research within a HDR program.

Professor Halcomb is an international award-winning nurse academic.  Professor Halcomb is the Editor of RCNis’ journal Nurse Researcher and the inaugural Professor of Primary Health Care Nursing at the University of Wollongong. She leads a strong research program in primary care nursing, with particular emphasis on nursing in general practice, chronic disease and nursing workforce issues. Prof Halcomb has authored over 224 peer reviewed papers and been an Investigator on grants worth over AUD$9 million. She has written a text and several book chapters on mixed methods research.
