The effects of mood on athletic performance has been studied extensively since the 1950's, with research indicating it can be a reliable predictor given certain parameters. The influence of factors such as injury on athlete wellbeing (AW) is also well covered, with the negative relationship unsurprising. There is limited research examining the effects of psychological predictors (i.e., mood) on AW, and as is the case with mood-performance studies, none have been conducted in a rugby league (RL) setting. This study will aim to fill these gaps in the literature by conducting correlational research which will examine the effects of mood on rugby league athlete (RLA) performance, and wellbeing over the course of a competitive RL season. It is hoped that any evidence gained leads to an enriched understanding of how mood may impact performance in open skilled sports such as RL, and more importantly, potentially offer team sports with an alternative avenue to monitor, and thus positively influence AW.
