Modelling Perennial Grains Within the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM)

The aim of this research project is to build a crop growth simulation model that can aid in the assimilation of perennial grain crops into Australian farming systems. The model will be created within the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM Next Generation) framework. Using the APSIM plant modelling framework, parameters and methods from the current APSIM Next Generation wheat and barley models will be adapted to represent processes for the phenology and growth of a perennial grain. Cues for defoliation and regrowth will be available from current perennial models APSIM Next Generation models, such as Forage plantain. The model will be parameterised, calibrated, and validated using a mixture of publicly available data on perennial grains, and data from dedicated perennial grain experiments at both Cowra, NSW and Pittsworth, QLD.
