Introduction: Despite the benefits of physical activity (PA), there is a drop in PA participation into adolescence. This decrease affects adolescents living in rural areas at a disproportionate rate compared with their urban counterparts. In these studies, we aimed to: a) collate evidence on the effectiveness of PA interventions among youth living in rural areas, b) to explore their perceptions, knowledge, attitudes, and determinants of PA. On the outcomes of these studies, we propose a future intervention.

Methods: Three databases, together with grey literature, were searched. Studies were included if participants 12-18 years old and based in rural communities. Outcomes extracted included PA mode, duration, frequency, intensity, self-reported access to facilities, academic, cognitive, and body composition. Following this systematic review of literature, 3 focus groups (FG) were conducted with youth in Dalby, QLD. Discussions during FG followed a semi structured interview guide. Two FG were conducted face to face, the third via videoconference (Zoom). FG were transcribed verbatim. Coding and thematic analysis was completed using NVIVO. An efficiency evaluation and feasibility study was developed utilizing Medical Research Council framework.
