Investigate policy and processes to construct sustainable organics recovery in regional areas

Management of organic waste will be a focus of Australian and Queensland Governments in coming years with both developing strategies to reduce waste to landfill. This will shift the burden onto local government as councils manage domestic waste. Half of the domestic waste stream is organic waste with an equal split of food and garden waste. Landfilling this valuable resource has environmental implications including loss of potential soil conditioner, increased greenhouse gas emissions and consumption of landfill airspace. This project will look to review policy levers used to reduce waste to landfill, understand community attitudes to food and garden organics collection in a regional local government and examine the soil conditioner produced using an aerated floor static pile composting system.
