The Effects of Increase in Inverter-Based Resources on Network Fault Protection

The current trend of introduction of distributed generation into existing power networks; and their reliance on the power-electronics of inverter-based resources (IBR) to feed the network, the traditional upstream-to-downstream power network model is no longer valid and the electrical characteristics of the network such as fault levels, frequency behaviour and transient events response are changing; affecting the ability of the network protection system to monitor and clear faults.
This proposal aims to find and assess the effects of IBR penetration on the performance of a power network existing traditional protection systems.
