Overview

The speed and continuous nature of change makes it necessary for organisations to be agile and to navigate business environments to achieve performance imperatives. The requirement to perform can in turn put pressure on the quality systems, governance processes, people, resources and supply-chains of the organisation. Senior leaders need to holistically consider the financial and non-financial drivers of performance in delivering on their strategic intent. Balancing good governance, market competitiveness, sustainable work processes and staff buy-in with profitability, capital investment and cash flow requires a clear understanding of the purpose and values of the organisation and the impact of its environments.

You will learn to navigate the business environment in which an organisation operates whilst balancing the mechanisms that drive business performance, while simultaneously managing the planning and operational activities of the organisation to maintain quality standards and align with organisational values. You will learn how to make decisions that drive business performance by considering the influences of governance micro and macro external forces, risk, ethics, regulatory requirements and corporate social responsibility on performance outcomes such as profitability, cash flow and other financial KPIs. Finally, you will explore how the needs and constraints of the organisation's people, resources and systems need to be considered, and how collaboration plays a role in in the strategies and decisions designed to drive performance outcomes.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Work with colleagues and reflect on your experience of the collaborative process
  2. Critically analyse relevant theories, models and frameworks to inform decisions relating to performance strategies
  3. Explain how to develop strategies that drive performance with consideration of governance, risk, ethics, regulatory requirements and corporate social responsibility
  4. Examine ways to take account of the business environment and how the needs and constraints of the organisation’s people, systems and resources need to be balanced to achieve sustainable performance that aligns with the organisation’s purpose and values and strategic intent.
