Standards of practice for registered nurses in Australia acknowledge the role of the individual and their family or significant others in developing collaborative care strategies. Patient experience has emerged in recent years as an important contributing quality indicator in measuring performance and quality of health care organisations. Many health organisations are valuing the individual and their patient experience as a driver of quality improvement. Embedded within the experience of the individual patient are three important strands: personalising care, tailoring services to meet individual needs and expectations, and engaging individual as partners in care. This experience is based on the principles and practice of patient centred care.
In this course the emphasis is on optimising the patient experience by partnering with individuals and families. It is important that beginning nursing students have a clear understanding of patient centred care and the need to develop collaborative practice strategies. Dignity, respect, information sharing, and collaborative decision-making are core concepts. Associated knowledge and skills will include emphasis on professional nursing qualities and attributes.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe the nature, context and importance of the patient care experience and partnering in care within the contemporary health organisational climate.
- Examine the patient experience, patient centred care and partnering in care definitions and reflect on the importance of these definitions in health care delivery.
- Examine patient experience through the concepts of dignity, respect, confidentiality and collaborative decision making.
- Examine themes that facilitate or act as barriers to the patient experience and partnering in care within health organisations.
- Identify and apply key Australian governances that promote and uphold professional and ethical care of patients that enable them control over their environment, manner of living and health care.

Important assessment information
It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Engagement in online discussion forums forms part of the directed study component of this course.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete all assessment items students must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for each item. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.
