In 2023, the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) School of Humanities and Communications will once again partner with the Alumni Office to hold an Alumni Book Club. The book club will lead with UniSQ alumnus Jade Edmistone’s book Fish Out of Water. This is a wonderful companion for all athletes who are venturing out into the uncharted waters of sports retirement. Jade has gently and honestly provided readers with a window into her post-sport journey, as well as that of others, and some preventative measures to contemplate. A gifted story teller, Jade depicts the old landscape of retirement, the new landscape of retirement, and the ongoing, ever-present challenge that all athletes, or anyone for that matter, face when closing a significant chapter of their life.

The online discussion with Jade about her book will take place on Wednesday, 22 March from 7pm-8pm Brisbane time. You can register to attend this discussion in the events section of this newsletter.

The other three books that will be featured this year are:

  • Tony Birch’s Dark as Last Night, the 2022 UniSQ Steele Rudd Short Story Collection Prize Winner, discussion on Thursday, 25 May 2023 from 7pm-8pm Brisbane time.

  • UniSQ Alumnus Melissa Pouliot's Write About Me discussion on Thursday, 24 August 2023 from 7pm-8pm Brisbane time.

  • Valerie Cockerell’s Manage Like a Mother: Leadership Lessons Drawn from the Wisdom of Mom discussion on Thursday, 26 October 2023 from 7pm-8pm Brisbane time.
