Indigenous cultural competencies

For a decade now, universities have been working toward better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. By developing the cultural knowledge and competencies of staff and their students, universities can influence the way that generations of graduating professionals honour, respect and include Indigenous Australians.

One of the ways that UniSQ is supporting this change is through offering On-Country learning journeys to their staff since 2013. On-Country is a day long experience where participants visit a range of important sites in and around Toowoomba to learn through Indigenous perspectives.

On reflection I was very ignorant of the cultural landscape of Toowoomba. There was very little in the curriculum about Aboriginal culture when I went through school (not Toowoomba) and this is the first opportunity I have taken up to start to broaden my understanding.
