What you can do

The 'Guidelines for responding to disclosures of sexual assault' outlines the key steps you should follow if you are supporting someone who has been sexually assaulted.  The steps are also summarised below: 

Attend to safety


Determine whether there are any immediate risks to the person's wellbeing and safety.

  • For on-campus incidents call Extension 2222.
  • For off-campus incidents call 000 - ask for Police.

Listen and be supportive




It is important to:

  • listen without interrupting
  • validate the person's experience by acknowledging their distress
  • encourage the person to seek support
  • allow them to make their own decisions.

Whilst a person may disclose a sexual assault, it should not be assumed this means they wish to make a formal report.

Counselling/medical services


If the person wishes to access counselling/medical services:

  • Toowoomba region: Toowoomba Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) 24 hour crisis service (Phone: 07 4616 6950)
  • Springfield/Ipswich region: West Moreton Hospital and Health Service (Phone: 07 3202 2766)
  • Contact the local hospital.

Reporting options


Employees wishing to report a sexual assault should contact the People Partner team in the People Portfolio.

Student complaints can be made in accordance with the student complaint management procedure.

Reports of a sexual assault can also be made to the Queensland Police

Follow up

Employees and students can debrief with the People Portfolio, Student Success and Wellbeing or seek external support.

Employees may also access the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
